Through this interactive grant session, Joan Prival from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will share with participants grant opportunities and ideas for their community college teacher education staff, students, and programs.
NSF provides almost $80 million per year for community colleges, primarily through the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE). This session will focus on the programs that provide most of this support including Advanced Technological Education (ATE); Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI); STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP); Teacher Professional Continuum (TPC); and others in DUE. The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program specifically for prospective teachers will be discussed. There will be a particular emphasis on opportunities for support of teacher preparation programs in community colleges.
An Update: Florida Community Colleges Offering Teacher Education Baccalaureate Degrees
This is a joint Forum with the Community College Baccalaureate Association and NACCTEP.
The role of community colleges in preparing teachers at the baccalaureate level continues to expand. This session will provide an update of the programs offered at Florida community colleges that have chosen this path, the issues they confront and the opportunities they have recognized. St. Petersburg College has been offering six bachelor’s degrees for several years and has recently added B.S. degrees in Educational Studies, Middle Grades General Science and Middle Grades Mathematics. Chipola College offers four year degree programs in Secondary and Middle School Education. Edison College is in the early stages of developing a teacher education baccalaureate degree.
The Role of Community Colleges in Creating Education Programs of Study
Pat Stanley, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Vocational and Adult Education, U.S. Department of Education, will provide information and discuss the role of community colleges in forming teacher education programs of study that link secondary education to postsecondary education and employers at the local, state, and national levels.

Dr. Stanley was formerly President of Frederick Community College, Maryland, and is a strong proponent of economic development. She has been a board member of the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), a member of the executive committee of the Presidents Academy, and has been active in the National Council for Staff, Professional and Organizational Development (NCSPOD), receiving the President’s Award in 2001. Pat is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors. Dr. Stanley received her doctorate in education from the University of Pacific in Stockton, California.
