Message From The President
What is the Good Message in your Day?
As you begin this newsletter, please ponder, "What is the Good Message of your day?" I have recently heard more than one teacher from pre-kindergarten through the university ask their students to share the Good Message of the day. At first I thought to myself, is this necessary? The more I considered the question the more I realized, what if we all thought about the Good Message of our day in education. Would we be surprised at our answers? Despite all the sabotage on education, we have a great deal of Good Messages to share. Maybe this is a tough question during tough economic times but in a profession founded in leadership and learning, we must all search and share Good Messages! READ MORE |

Director's Note
Dear NACCTEP Members, Friends, and Colleagues:
It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the year. It is also surprising that with the arrival of 2012, NACCTEP will celebrate its 10 year anniversary. Over the past few months, I have been contacting the NACCTEP Past Presidents to gather information for a future article. As I read their responses to the questions, I am reminded of the knowledge, skills, and ability that each contributed to the Association. I was reminded of the impact that NACCTEP has had on each of them. The Past Presidents shared how NACCTEP helped them grow professionally. With their assistance, NACCTEP has positively impacted many individuals, institutions, and teacher education programs. READ MORE |

| Transfer General Education Cores in Community Colleges |
| By Julie Bilz, Ivy Tech Community College, Columbus, IN |
David (not a real student) wants to go into teaching. He decides he is going to attend a community college to ease into the college climate since he has been out of school for many years. He contacts his local community college and makes an appointment with an advisor. As he sits down with his advisor, he is asked what four-year university he wants to attend. David has no idea at this point. His advisor tells him he needs to know where he wants to transfer because his program and courses will be based on the four-year institution he wants to attend. David asks about his choices. The advisor pulls out 25 transfer agreements for David to view. David also needs to know what age group he wants to teach because his decision will affect his program. David is not sure. David goes ahead and registers for classes based on what he thinks he might want to do not knowing whether all his credits will transfer. This scenario is typical for education majors. Early childhood, elementary, and secondary pathways all have varying requirements depending on the receiving four-year institution. This situation can be complicated for students and advisors. READ MORE |

| Discovery Learning: What it is, How it is Taught, Why it is Important in Teacher Preparation Courses |
| By Tawn Hauptli, Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ |
Of all of the roles I have in life, I believe my role as a mother is the most important. In an effort to engage and to be as fully present as possible in my daughter's life, I have been her soccer coach for the past four years. At the start of this season, I attended a U10 soccer clinic for coaches. During the informative three hour session, the facilitator talked about the importance of using the guided discovery method for coaching youth soccer. With this method, coaches set the parameters of the practice session, allow players to play, and ask focused questions that allow the players to discover what works best to score a goal, pass to a teammate, or defend against the opposing team. Spotlight College – Hostos Community College |
| By Sarah Church, Hostos College, Bronx, NY |
| Some 45 years ago, a diverse group of community leaders, students, educators, activists, and elected officials came together to demand a higher education space in one of New York City’s most neglected communities. Like the great education reform activist for whom our institution was named, they believed in the transformational power of institutions of higher education. They realized that the creation of a community college would dramatically change the educational, cultural, social, and economic life of the South Bronx. In short, these visionary “founding elders” recognized what the country is discovering today: how community colleges can improve the quality of life, not just for the students who attend, but also for the surrounding community.
