Ivy Tech Community College

The education department at Ivy Tech Community College (Ivy Tech) began in November of 2000 with the creation and implementation of the Child Development Program. Later, in 2002, the name of the program was changed to the Early Childhood Program, and Brenda Ragle, Ed.D., was hired to serve as the program chair. In 2006, Ivy Tech received approval to offer an Associate of Science in Elementary Education degree. This degree was a statewide agreement with Indiana State University, and subsequently, several additional universities in Indiana began accepting credits. As the education program continued to grow, the first full time education faculty, Julie Bilz, Ph.D., was hired in the fall of 2009. In 2010, the Associate of Science in Secondary Education degree was approved, and plans are in progress to establish concentrations and articulation agreements. READ MORE

Western Governors University and NACCTEP Announce New Teacher Education Scholarship Program

Western Governors University (WGU) is pleased to offer the WGU NACCTEP Teacher Education Scholarships. These scholarships, each valued up to $2,000, are designed to help graduates and staff of NACCTEP member community colleges attend college online to finish their teaching degrees or earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Although WGU’s competency-based approach makes it possible for students to accelerate the time it takes for them to complete their degree program, the scholarship awards are based on a reasonable experience of four six-month terms for completion of a degree. Actual time to completion will depend upon the incoming student’s prior experience, academic background, and time commitment to study.

Partnering with Your Local School System for Early Field Experience

With the advent of the first Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree programs at Howard Community College (HCC) in 2000, a formal field experience program was developed in partnership with the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS). The AAT degree programs include a mandatory 45 hours of fieldwork attached to specific courses. Though it's atypical for a community college to partner with a school system in this way, it has proven to be a successful relationship that has enhanced the classroom education of over 3,400 students in the past decade. College was not a topic of conversation during my childhood or in high school. I dropped out of school my senior year. I was quickly headed the wrong direction; I had two choices - jail or the military. After being in the military for a number of years, deployed around the world, having three children, I needed to consider what I would do after I retired from the U.S. Air Force. What job, out there, would give me a stable family life; having the same time off as my children, enjoying summers and holidays? If I were a teacher then perhaps I would have the same schedule as our boys. READ MORE
