Director's Note

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

On behalf of the NACCTEP Executive Board, I thank you for your membership and continued support of NACCTEP. The newly elected 2010-2011 Board members have hit the ground running and are already working on ideas and activities for the coming year. As we welcome new Board members, I would also like thank our Past President, Dr. Carole Berotte-Joseph, for her leadership over the past year. Carole’s vision and initiative have contributed to the advancement of the Association. She is a true advocate and supporter of community college teacher education programs and it has been a pleasure working with her.

NACCTEP is now in its ninth year of existence, and has taken on a leading role in promoting and advocating for community college teacher education programs across the nation. I recently came across minutes from a November 2001 planning meeting in which the NACCTEP mission was being finalized, and it struck me that while our mission has remained steady, much of our world and realities have changed. Community colleges are much more visible than they were a few years ago. They are seen as essential players in the education and re-education of young people, professionals, and re-careering adults. Community college teacher education programs, in particular, are being recognized for developing a variety of quality programs and services that meet the needs of local communities, and attracting and preparing a diverse student population.

NACCTEP will continue to evolve as an association that advocates for community college programs on the national level, promotes the proactive development of new teacher education program options, and provides valuable resources for member and public use. At the end of September, members of the NACCTEP Executive Board will convene in Washington D.C. to network and advocate on behalf of teacher education programs at the community college. Dr. Jerry Pinsel has quickly transitioned into her role as NACCTEP President and will co-lead activities and meetings in D.C.  Over the course of a few days we will meet with legislators and network with representatives from AACC, AACTE, NSF, ACE, and others.  It will be a very productive session for our Board and ultimately our membership.

This fall all members are being contacted regarding the 2010 NACCTEP Profile Survey. The purpose of this survey is to showcase models of teacher education programs at member colleges; identify state and national issues and trends; provide a resource for community colleges to use in their efforts to create and/or improve their own teacher education programs; and serve as a national data source for community college teacher education program information. Through your responses we are able to paint a clear picture of the successes, challenges, and current realities of our programs.  This information is essential to telling our story. Please complete your survey and contribute to this endeavor.

I look forward to another great year!

Sincerely,
Ray A. Ostos
NACCTEP Executive Director
