NACCTEP By-Law Vote

The NACCTEP members present during the Business Meeting on Sunday, March 15, 2009, passed the following By-Law change.

Article V – Board of Directors

A. Members: The membership of the Board of Directors shall consist of a President, President Elect, Past President, Executive Director, Secretary, Treasurer, Five At-large Members and a Student Member. The Executive Director of the NACCTEP shall be a permanent non-voting member of the Committee. The Maricopa Community Colleges administrator responsible for the NACCTEP shall serve as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors.

Dear NACCTEP Members,

The future we face at our community colleges is growing more and more challenging. We all have to devise creative strategies to meet the needs of our students, especially those who are entering the field of education. States are slashing education budgets across the country in the wake of this unprecedented economic downturn, and teachers are not immune from legislators’ red pens.

Dear NACCTEP Members,

I want to personally thank all of you who attended this year’s NACCTEP conference Discover the Future of Community College Teacher Education Programs. Over two-hundred attendees representing community colleges from across the country enjoyed dynamic keynote speakers, and innovative educational sessions and forums focusing on community college teacher education programs, policy, partnerships, and practice. In addition, the NASA pre-conference, Cosmic Science, and our newest addition to the conference schedule, the Regional Roundtable Session, were both well received. Conference evaluations demonstrate your continued satisfaction with the conference, and we appreciate your positive feedback. When asked by my advisor and professor of education, Mr. Kit Carson, if I was interested in becoming the Student Executive Board Member for NACCTEP, I knew it would be a great opportunity and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To be quite honest, I didn’t realize just how much I would benefit from the experience. I, like most community college education students, had never heard of NACCTEP. Over the next several months, I would come to realize just how valuable this organization is to education students at community colleges across the United States.

Discovering Google Apps for the Classroom

As a part of the 2009 NACCTEP Discover the Future Conference, Jeannette Shaffer of Maricopa County Community College District presented the session Discover 10 Ways to Use Google Apps in the Classroom. Her session revolved around the implementation of a $880,000 three-year NSF grant project titled Achieving Technological Literacy in Arizona for Students and Teachers (ATLAST). The goals of the grant include the acquisition of skills that will help teachers and future teachers prepare students for an increasingly technology driven society.

A Science Conference: Through the Eyes of a Pre-service Science Teacher and a NACCTEP National Scholarship Recipient

What is it that teachers do at conferences and how do they take the knowledge they gain and implement it into their classrooms? This was one of the many questions I had as a pre-service teacher. Being able to attend the NASA Cosmic Science pre-conference before the 2009 NACCTEP national conference gave me great insight into what happens at a teacher conference.

Teacher Education Program Graduate Dreams of Helping High School Dropouts

When Vernon Wilkinson graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College’s (MATC) Liberal Arts and Sciences’ teacher education track in 2004, he followed a different career path than that taken by most others in his program. Many go on to earn bachelor’s degrees and then teach in grade schools, middle schools or traditional high schools. But Wilkinson has another passion.

He wants to work with a special group of students who have slipped through the cracks – high school dropouts. He plans to help students who return to obtain their GEDs or enroll in adult high school programs.

10th Anniversary Future Teachers Conference

Project TEACH and the Washington State Center of Excellence for Careers in Education hosted the 10th Anniversary of the Future Teachers Conference at the Green River Community College on March 7, 2009. The 2009 Future Teachers Conference was sponsored by WaMu, now backed by the strength of JP Morgan Chase, Washington Education Association, and the Kobe Foundation.
