This handbook is designed to help students learn about the teaching profession, and their rights and responsibilities as a student taking teacher education coursework at Maricopa Community Colleges. It is offered here as an example of a resource developed by NACCTEP members that can be replicated elsewhere.

Improving the Skills and Credentials of Migrant, Seasonal and American Indian/Alaska Native Head Start Teachers: Building from Within (2010)



 

This White Paper describes the hurdles that teachers in Head Start’s migrant and seasonal and American Indian and Alaska Native communities face in pursuing degrees and credentials; puts the challenges they face in context; and offers promising practices and recommendations that can strengthen this teacher corps and build the Head Start program’s cultural and linguistic expertise. NACCTEP Executive Board members contributed to the development of this document, and NACCTEP member colleges are cited within.

The State of Affairs (2009)

 

In November 2008, the National Science Foundation funded a meeting of a group of leaders from two-year colleges (including NACCTEP Executive Board members) and STEM professional organization to discuss the state of STEM teacher preparation in the United States. The outcome of this meeting was a report, The State of Affairs: Impact and Implications of STEM Teacher Education at Two-Year Colleges. This report addresses current practices, challenges, and recommendations for future action related to STEM teacher preparation at two-year colleges.



 

Contributors believe this publication will inform institutions wanting to initiate or enhance their STEM teacher preparation, and guide policy makers as they forge legislation to enhance STEM education in the U.S.

Teaching by Choice (2008)

 

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), in partnership with NACCTEP and with support from the National Science Foundation, is pleased to announce the release of Teaching by Choice: Community Colleges Expand K–12 STEM Pathways and Practices, a report of recommendations for community college practice in post-baccalaureate teacher education and professional development programs for current and future K–12 teachers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology generated during the ‘Teaching by Choice: Beyond 2+2’ conference. The conference was held as a pre-conference to the NACCTEP 2008 national conference, Leaping to New Heights in Community College Teacher Education Programs.

The Maricopa County Community College District and Educational Impact are proud to present Teaching Strategies to Super Charge Your Classroom. This online professional development program provides faculty members with an understanding of the teaching strategies needed to be a successful college instructor. Quality Teacher Preparation Programs: Pre K-12 (2005)

 

The Teacher Education Partnership Commission (TEPC), a group of 40 education and business leaders representing community colleges, universities, Pre K-12 partners, the Arizona Department of Education, and business interests, spent over six months reviewing research and discussing what constitutes a quality teacher preparation program. The purpose of this document is to:

 

• Inform and guide Pre K-12 teacher preparation programs as they work to develop and improve programs to prepare quality teachers for Pre K-12 educational settings.
• Educate policy makers at all levels about the key components of a quality teacher preparation program.
• Inform the greater community about the commitment of business leaders, educators, and the institutions they serve, to the preparation of quality teachers for our schools and our students.
